I’ve finally got everything working as it should, and KoalaSafe is great!
My remaining problem is that I use the service “LogMeIn” to remote access my family’s Macs both within, and away from, home. I use it for the inevitable troubleshooting problems that come up.
In testing, I was unable to use LogMeIn to access our kids laptops once they were on the KoalaSafe Wi-Fi. I did some tinkering, and found that if I completely unblock the Proxies & VPNs Category, LogMeIn works again. They have a LogMeIn client installed on their MacBooks, and I have the master control app on mine.
The concern here is that by having no protection in this category, it opens up the network to concerns. Indeed, I was testing one of the kids MacBooks this morning, type Pinterest.com (incorrectly) into the browser and was immediately redirected to a malware Site with a bunch of popup warnings inviting me to download a ‘fix.’ I have never seen a redirection like this on any of our Macs before, and I wondered if it was due to unblocking this category.
What sort of potential trouble are we opening ourselves by leaving this category unblocked? Is there a way to finesse it’s implementation so that services like LogMeIn and Apple Remote Desktop are given clearance?
