Hi all. We bought a Koalasafe a couple of months back and are immensely happy with it. The only problem we've had is the little unit just does not have the wifi range to cover our house. Consequently I purchased a Ubiquity UniFi AP-AC-Lite access point. It was relatively cheap, works really well and the included wireless controller software is very easy to use.
My setup looks like this
kid's devices --w-- Ubiquiti AP --c-- Koalasafe --c-- switch --c-- cable router --c-- internet
Here the --w-- is a wireless connection and the --c-- is a wired connection. The Ubiquity is connected to the LAN interface of the Koalasafe.
I reconfigured the kid’s devices so they are now associating with an SSID coming off the Ubquiti. They no longer associate with the "Koala" SSID coming off the Koalasafe.
This is a flat layer 2 network. The router is the default gateway for all devices and hands out DHCP to the local network. The Koalasafe was already configured with a profile containing all the kid's devices. Putting those devices behind the Ubiquity rather than the Koalasafe didn't change anything. Their traffic is still piped through the Koalasafe and it applies the existing schedule and filters to them. This makes sense as the Koalasafe is looking for the MAC addresses of the devices and simply putting them behind a layer 2 wireless bridge (the Ubquiti) allows it to keep seeing those MAC addresses.
Note we have a switch between the Koalasafe and the router because we have a high bandwidth internet link and have some high throughput devices that need to use it and these devices are not used by the kids. We don’t want the Koalasafe to become a bottleneck so we bypass it. If it wasn't for this requirement we wouldn't need the switch.
Also note when I was setting this up I had to reboot everything a couple of times to get it to work. The router and the Koalasafe did not like the network topology changing around them. I expect if I waited a couple of hours then the arp tables and other things would time out and it would all come good but I was too impatient to wait
